It's so mental to think that next week is Install week and then after that there's only Degree Show & Graduation left. It's very exciting to be moving on to other things but obviously at the same time it's very sad.
Preparing for this exhibition/assessment has really highlighted how brilliant our class is. It's an opportunity to see everyone at their most stressed and witness how they cope. I have to say I'm very impressed and proud to be part of such a year - drama has been absolutely minimal and the majority of everyone's attitudes towards sharing their Degree Show space, preparing it and generally working together have been beautiful. It's so reassuring to know the level of compromise that's going on, and that so many people are genuinely excited about seeing other people's work.

What an incredible group of people. SEA Class of 2011, take a bow!

The clouds that I could see from my house tonight were completely apocalyptic! Absolutely incredible. Roughly aboooout half ten/eleven? The sky was a really deep dark blue, straight out of a painting and the clouds were as close to black as possible without being black. It was so dramatic my camera didn't even pick it up properly. Consulted my little weather book and think it may be Stratus Fractus? "Dark, rapidly changing, ragged wisps of cloud"? Very, verrrry dark.

Very exciting. Must remember to tell little Amy!

Moving into the Garage.

Looked into the bizarre combination of plumbing/anatomy and realised that it was DULL. I think in an attempt to make an audience think of the pipes in a more personal way I went for too literal and obvious a choice. SO decided that Peter Pan was what I was going to write. Something completely unrelated, something that I enjoy and want to share?

Went in on Saturday to start writing on the Garage pipes, didn't take that long and didn't get too far into the story. Didn't go that far up the wipes though and so spent all day yesterday [Monday] painting over the writing and then writing it out again. This time with a ladder and so the writing goes ALL the way up the pipe, disappearing into the black paint/fresh white paint line.
Besides being sure at some points that I was going to die [every time Alice came into the room she yelled "KATIE!" which made me nearly fall off my high, high ladder perch.], I am PLEASED. Think it's very successful formally, and works well with the other lines in the space.

These were two of my main colour attempts. Not that keen on them, think the blue looks great - excellent colour - but too simple? Although I enjoy the abstract form of the pipes I think subtlety is really important and the writing works far better.

Hot and cold colours were not on purpose.

In The Pipeline.

OKAY. Keen to move on from lists before Bri-Bri thinks that's all I'm capable of. However I think I'm gonna stick to a similar thing. Really, it's just a natural progression ...
Anyway, been looking at the pipes in the Barnes, intend on using the Garage space for my installation site. Never considered it before cause it's the obvious gallery space and I don't think that's the point of this project, but I would only be using the pipes. So it's kind of like Jim Lambie's thinking of filling the space white keeping it empty. Been playing with the pipes in the studio; tried writing out stuff, just wrote out the definitions of pipe and some people's favourite words - I like how subtle it is. Like the idea that people would need to look for it in the space, especially in one as big as the Garage.

Gonna try some colour next!

Week-and-a-Half Long Headache

So far my list stretches over 12 pages and is sitting at 575 films long. That works out to 30 films a year which puts into perspective just how many I can't remember. I reckon it should be more along the lines of 30 every 4 months, minimum. The longer it gets the more it irritates me! I swear to god I don't think I can sit for another day in front of a computer screen and a notepad, every single background noise is magnified to a brain shattering level.

Room With A New Jewish Friend.

Last time this was read; made friends with an Italian Jewish man who used to be an architect, had a teeny little dog (not unlike everyone else in Venice), worked in Brighton, diiiiid not like it and spent lots of time in Edinburgh at the Fringe!

I have been rubbish updating this throughout this project, got to get used to keeping on top of EVERYTHING at the one time. Dearie me.

Anyway, I was looking at things like dancing, music, then drawing in relation to music and what I came up with in the end was a giant three-dimensional drawing that includes lots of interpretations of the one thing. [That thing was the song 'Music box' by Enter The Haggis.]

I'm very pleased with this project, unlike last time.

This is purely us being lazy but today we were chatting about the wonderful world of our blogs and how it would be sooo much easier for everyone to navigate if we had links to each others on our own blogs. May not be a successful suggestion but it makes sense in my head ... anyone else willing to give it a go? Make a little section that's a list of the other people's blog? Well I spoke to my Grampa and although the first hour was made up of excellent anecdotes from an ex-architecture student they weren't exactly about the site. And I learnt about the Board of Governors and their purpose seeing as I was completely oblivious before [it was the Chairman of the Board of Governors he was for a while]. David Leslie is an interesting man.

HOWEVER I do have a charming selection of interesting little things that he told me about the Mac, whether intentional or in passing. Some daft ones, for example; the Director of the School when the Director's Room/Studio were being built [regrettably I cannot remember his name because I felt it was rude to take notes when chatting to your own Grampa] used to work on giant canvases and couldn't fit them up the stairs so in the ceiling of the Director's Room and the floor of his Studio there is a slot where they created a pulley system in order to move his canvases about!

Amongst the tales of architecture there is also a possibility of ANOTHER link to Amy, we seem to be working together quite a lot. While doing architecture he had to choose another elective [?] an he chose clay modeling. He was the only chap to do it and claims that due to a bias against architecture students the man who was meant to be teaching him naffed off leaving him to try and sculpt an eye in the best way he could. There was a glass panel to another room and in the other room there was a wee man sitting at a desk watching him. The wee man came through and said something along the lines of "No, no laddie, you're doing it all wrong!" This man turned out to be Benno Shotz, the current Head of Sculpture; and so for a year my grampa received one on one teaching from him at least once a week.

Long shot, but I wondered whether this could perhaps be Neil's great grandfather?

He also gave me a nice book, the old MacKintosh Masterwork one. Have a wee read of that.

The thing that I found most interesting from our conversation was the things about the building work going on. Long and short of it being that at the time when the renovations started it was him that .... coordinated [?] them. So when I mentioned that we were based in the basement he started talking about the work that was going on down there. Although unsure whether this is still the case because he resigned several years ago due to things going slightly off track, originally the idea was to create a miniature museum next to the H&C room to display all the MacKintosh/MacDonald artifacts properly.

SO, in conclusion I think I'd like to go down the route of the builders, I'm gonna go chat to one of them. Think I'll go make friends with the one who sits behind the desk at the door, he always looks so lonely. It may not lead to anything but I don't mind, never know if you don't try!

Building through the years

I'm going to go and chat to my grampa tomorrow. He studied Architecture at GSA and then years later reappeared as the School Director ... or at least I think it was Director. Gosh that's really something I should know, what and awful grandchild I am. It'll be interesting to see his views develop from being a student and then becoming part of the staff, not to mention to see if there are any differences in how the site is viewed over the years.
